I swim and work very hard to be at the level I swim at, but my teamate hardly ever works hard and usualy just slacks off on most sets, and he's hardly ever sore and I'm ever sore. But when it comes to meets, he is as good if not better than I am... why is this?
I don't think its fair to me

It may seem like you are not achieving anything and he is achieving everything, but the opposite is actually true.

He may have more "natural talent" than you in the pool. But in the grand scheme of things hard work will eventually pay off.

You may be creeping up on his times. If not, you may be slowing down the distance between your time improvement.

Focus on improving your times. Keep working hard. Focus on YOUR workouts, focus on YOUR stroke techniques, and one day the starter buzzer will go off and the next thing you will know is you are touching the wall first.

When I swam I was the same way. There was a pair of twins I swam against who were both better than me and no matter what I did I couldn't beat them. At one meet, I finally came in second. I had "split" the twins. They were not happy. The following meet I beat them both, and I never looked back. That took me 9 years.

Just because he looks like he is slacking off, it may not mean that he is really slacking. A lot of the time, my parents say "don't go 100% in practice. Go around 70 - 80%. But remember, work on your technique. So in practice, i am not always sprinting, but i work hard in a way to improve my technique. You do not have to be sore to improve and be a better swimmer. In practice, everyone goes in front of me, because while everyone is sprinting, i work on my technique. But when it comes to meets, make sure you give 110% of all you have. For me, at meets, I am always a lot faster than my teamates who work hard at practice in a different way. If you try to slow down in practice, think about technique, it makes all the difference. Trust me. =)

the answer is he has most likely not been worn out from practice which is why he is doing better then you at the meets. when you are sore your muscles tend to be a whole lot stiffer than when you are well rested.this guy also might be in better condition than you from per say running which builds up the lungs. if it where me i would not try my hardest at swim practice and relax some then when swimming and at the meet you will be able to kill it and surprise everyone.and remember just have fun that is what swimming is all about.

Natural talent is always a factor more so in swimming though is technique. You can pull hard and have all the stamina in the world but if your technique is off you won't be fast. Also taller people with big feet have an advange ie longer stroke and flipper feet. So work with your coach on technique or just quit swimming and pick up water polo its more fun anyway.

Genetics and the other reason his swimming is more effecient than yours. I learned this a long time ago when I was very strong and tried so hard to swim faster, but when I had someone really break down my stroke and became more effecient, I was smoking people without having to try so hard. Work on improving your stroke. Even the best are always trying to tweak their stroke to be more effecient. If you can do this you will go faster and longer with much less effort.

Some people are "natural boorn" swimmers. They have the capacity to swim hard with out using much energy. It also might be that he has swam longer than you. Keep working at it, if he continues to slack off when you don't, soon you will be better than he is!! Happy Swimming!

I have the same problem with one of my friends... I go to practice EVERYday and work my butt off, and she comes 3-4 times a week, and slacks off during those 3-4 days, and still is close to my times... I think its just a lot of natural talent

Some aspects of physique and athleticism -- just like some aspects of intelligence or good looks -- is simply inherited. Flexibility, muscle strength, power can all be *influenced* by practice and repetition, but there will always be an uneven starting ground if someone comes from a gene pool that simply has a better muscle structure to begin with.

Sorry, wish it were otherwise.

i don't know, but that bothers me a lot. I work my a** off everyday at practice and some one who just goof around at practice do better than me. I have nothing against that person, but life is not fair!!!
