One of the most common/popular meanings of Christmas is the gift of God's son, Jesus Christ, to men on Earth. The true origin though, is unknown.

The word Christmas comes from the old English "Cristes maesse" meaning Christ's Mass. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Scriptural basis for the Christmas scene comes from the Gospels of Luke and Matthew.
The actual birthday of Jesus is not known; therefore, the early Church Fathers in the 4th century fixed the day around the old Roman Saturnalia festival (17 - 21 December), a traditional pagan festivity. The winter solstice occurs about 21st December each year. It is the day of the year when the night is longest and the daytime shortest. It was the traditional date for followers of many different Pagan religions to celebrate the rebirth of the sun. Following the solstice, each succeeding day has slightly more sunlight than the previous day. It was seen as a promise that warmth would return once more to the earth with the coming of Jesus Christ.
The first mention of the birthday of Jesus is from the year 354 AD during the time of Pope Julius I. Gradually all Christian churches, except Armenians and Orthodoxs who celebrate Christmas on 6th January (the date of the baptism of Jesus as well as Epiphany), accepted the date of December 25th.

Christmas is the day that christians celebrate Jesus's birth and thank God for sending his son to die for their sins. However, Jesus was not born in December. The shepherds would not have been out in the field during the winter, and the manger would not have been warm enough to keep baby jesus from turning into a popsicle. Although we don't know when Jesus was born, it is likely that he was born in the spring. December 25th is the date of a pagan holiday. When the christians took over, the pagan people were like, "No way dude, we're not giving up our holiday!" so the christains said, "How bout this: you keep your holiday, but now we celebrate Jesus instead of your pagan whatsit, mkay?" and the pagans said, "Dude, I'm down with that," and the christains said, "God be praised!"

Somewhere along the way America and Capitalism invented Santa in order to sell more products to help the economy expand and show those darned commies who's boss.

Christmas is a Christian festival that stole December 25th from the pagan festival of Yuletide.

I have no problem with Christmas, but think that it should be moved to Jesus' true birth date, April 1st.

I just celebrate the Solstice. And Festivus. I think Jesus of Nazareth was born around this time, but not exactly on the 12/25. The winter Solstice was actually celebrated by the pagan Romans. When christianity was up and comming, one of the caesars adopted the solstice as jesus's birthday to integrate christianity into the empire. Now the way you typed it, it's seems like somebody is complaining in spanglish... "christ, mas?" Christ more?

It depends on your perspective. If you are a devout person filled with the love of god, then it means that the Lord's only son was born on that day. And people of faith choose to celebrate his birth with a holiday. If you are a advertising proffessional. Then it means BUY,BUY,BUY! We need profits! We need to clear out this inventory to make room for the new inventory, the new models. Every American needs this stuff. We have to make an ad campiagn that will make every person in the country want to buy one of these! Lets keep those stock holders happy!

Many people, mostly Christians, claim we're celebrating the birth of Jesus. However, Jesus wasn't even born on Christmas, and I don't share the Christian perspective of him anyway (I mostly celebrate Yule instead). What is properly celebrated is Santa Claus and his gifts to good children. He represents kindness to others and that is why I will continue to celebrate Christmas with my family.

What the big type implies: CHRIST! It's the celebration of Jesus, who was born in a manger unto a virgin named Mary (who was only about 14 or 15 years old at the time) as the propheses earlier in the Bible had said. We give gifts to each other like the wise men gave gifts to Jesus when they came at His birth.
Thanks for asking such a deep question. I hope this answered it.
