I have bought a number of Dell laptops and have never had a problem with any of them. I have on the other hand fixed a lot of HP's. I work as a tech at an ISP and never had a Dell in for any reason other than upgrades. I find it has a lot to do with the user. Computers don't break the software does 99% of the time. The more you know about how they work the less problems you will have. Go Dell, I also like IBM's but they are a little pricey.

They are both good laptops. The main difference between Dell and HP laptops will be their warranty coverage.
Dell is 3 years and HP is 1 year, cost extra for an extended warranty (HP)

Dell if something does break like the cd-rom, Dell overnights their replacement parts.

Both have same quality. Dell has noiseless/faster keyboard, HP/Compaq has quick restore CD to save time and mostly with higher resolution screen for photo demo. Find good bargain at auctions w/o sale fee.

try putting the pros and cons in columns and rate the features you prefere, that way you'll see which one comes out tops, dell tends to be slightly more protected with warrenties, but you pay for it because they're usually a lot more expensive
