Who's the professional that can help a family figure out why they aren't doing any better than paycheck to paycheck living? Granted the family lives in one of the most expensive parts of the country to live in, but .... And how to assess this professional in advance to know if they are truly qualified to analyze and give advice?

I think you already answered your own question knowing that they are living in the most expensive area.

I am also sure that they:
1. eat out often, and not off the dollar menu.
2. send kids to private school
3. have very nice new car
4. have the best toys
5. pay others to do things like cut grass, do laundry, pick up things

Any number of these things & more is why. See I just saved you a ton of money in consulting fees already! It is not that hard to find huge holes in a $150k gap.

If you still think you should hire someone to say "stop spending so much", then look in the phone book. Interview them & ask them thier experience.

Boy I should have charged you for that! lol

I think it would be ridiculously easy to fix your problems by yourself. You're OBVIOUSLY spending too much! I just read a book called "Green With Envy." You should too.
