Using soundtracks from other movies on trailers is quite common.

Usually the earliest trailers are assembled before the score is ready for the finished film. The soundtrack is not added until post-production, so the music is generally one of the last things to materialize.

I first noticed this being a Tangerine Dream fan when they used part of the SORCERER soundtrack for the trailer of THE WARRIORS. After that I started noticing it a lot (partly because I then got a job as a projectionist). But that single piece from SORCERER would show up in other places (GHOST DAD comes to mind) and I sent a letter to the TANGERINE DREAM fan club to ask about it. They sent a response that the music was written for the studio and the studio owned it. They are free to use it in any way they wish.

The most jarring to me was using the Requiem For A Dream Soundtrack to promote a Lord of the Rings movie.
