The amount of fuel needed to start the avg car is quit low anymore. With fuel injection it does not require as much fuel to start as it did with a carbureted motor. On a carbureted motor you would depress the gas pedal to pump fuel in to the intake and to close the choke. (Assuming you had an Auto choke carb.) A carb would pump about a teaspoon fuel of fuel in to the intake. When you would turn the motor over it would suck this fuel in. with a fuel injected motor it only lets fuel in when the injector pulses. This is often shot straight in to the chamber. Injectors under full pulse push about 1/3 teaspoon in to the chamber to be burned. If the car is idling you’re using the less amount of fuel to keep the engine running. however if your going to be idling for extended periods of time (Longer then 3 minutes) it is best to turn of the motor.

Generally speaking, at a signal intersection, you might as well leave it running...unless you have one of those gas guzzling H2 Vehicles, or one of it's clones Personally If I had one of those things it would be sitting on my front lawn as a decoration....I certainly would not be driving it.
