That is a pretty generic term, and it would be hard to track down the first time it was ever used.

For instance, according to one definition of the word 'secret' as being undercover, or working or operating without the knowledge of the general public - and one definition of the word 'club' as a thick heavy stick used as a weapon - then the term could have been used in caveman days to describe how it was you managed to do away with your noisy, wife-coveting neighbor; i.e., "I thumped him over the head with my secret club." (This is only possible if you believe the Geico ads depicting intelligent, eloquent cavemen.)

On the other hand, if you subscribe to the definition of 'secret' as being something mysterious and often beyond common understanding, and the definition of 'club' as being a group or an association of people with a common interest, it could still go back as far as those cavemen. Say there was one group of (maybe) democratic cavemen who believed in the preservation of all species, particularly the wooly mammoth, and there was another group of (probably) republican cavemen who just loved to eat wooly-mammoth burgers and clothe their wives and mistresses in wooly-mammoth furs, but this group didn't want the other group to know about it. So this group would form a secret club in order to pursue their common interest as lovers of wooly-mammoth meat and furs, and they would sneak around and kill the beasts every chance they had, and then spin a story about why the beasts were dying off.

Personally, I think the term, or phrase, "secret club" is too generic to trace.

Since there have been secret societies, conspiracies and clubs all the way back to Greek times, it's hard to say.

I suspect kids have been forming secret clubs almost as long as the parents have. It certainly isn't an American invention.
