Is it swapped for £ (pound sign) - might be you need to select US or UK keyboards in control panel.

Can you type any other symbols (like ?,!,#,$)? If no then your shift key is probably jammed. How about the number 2? If not then the 2 key is jammed.. Either shake it up a bit, pop out the key and try to clean it, or just buy a new keyboard..
If you need something quick, hold down the alt key and type 64 on the number pad (make sure your num lock is on!)

i think this will work, mine does that but mines Emachines. it might be the speech mark on top of number two. try that. that will work. hopefully. thats what it's like on mine. mine is USA so i havn't got a pound sighn. i got a amecian dollar sighn.
