The following steps should speed up your PC. Do all of the steps with patience:

1. Run Disk clean-up. Then delete unused files. (start>program>accessories>sys... tools> disk clean-up)
2. Check for disk errors. (right click on a disk-drive>properties>tools >error checking, then restart)
3. Run disk defragmenter.
4. Delete cookies. (you can do it from your browser options: tools>internet options)
5. Delete cache or temporary files. (you can do it from your browser options) or, click on 'start", 'run', type 'temp' then click ok. Whatever shows up, just delete.
6. Delete all history files. (you can do it from your browser options, or, CTRL + H, then delete)
7. Empty recycle bin.
8. Delete unused icons & short-cuts from anywhere including desktop.
9. Uninstall any software or game that you use only once or twice in a week.
10. Delete temporary internet files. (you can do it from your browser options: tools>internet options)
11. Delete all recent files. (click on start, click run, then type "recent", delete all the files which show up)
12. Run a full virus scan. If any threat found, eliminate that completely.

The more you have on your pc the slower it will run.is this all you are getting? No pop-ups or change of home page? This would indicate spyware.I have a Sony Vaio too.I uninstalled Skype as I rarely use it and my pc speeded up dramatically.I also got rid of Norton and all it's components and installed Superantispyware in it's place. All the above advice is good.Basically go into add or remove programmes and get rid of anything you rarely use.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

uninstall any unneeded programs, particularly ones that start with windows.

Do a disc cleanup (right click on drive icon and choose properties) or use ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com.

Next defrag the hard drive (again right click on drive icon choose properties then tools)

Also run a virus scan with your anti-virus and also run any antispyware programs you have running.

defrag? their useless and a waste of time - honestly.
to those saying clean your registry? NO! unless you really know what your doing, don't even consider it.
using msconfig? very bad idea again uless you REALLY know what your doing.
Find someone who knows computers really well, get THEM to check out msconfig for you.
ask a techy friend, are someone who has a techy friend.
someone always knows one.

try this:
start>>run>>type: "msconfig.exe" and go to the startup tab.
uncheck all the programs that you don't want starting up. becareful that you know which programs you are closing down, becasue some are needed to boot up windows.
click ok, and you'll need to restart. this should get your comp to boot up faster.
if you have alot of shortcuts on your desktop, try to get rid of many of them. they tend to slow down your computer as well.
i hope this helps.
