I think the answer is YES!
The only thing I know about chickens (apart from the fact that the corn fed ones are well tasty) is that the world record for keeping a headless chicken alive is 18 months (see link below). His name was "Mike" and he eventually choked to death due to the fact that the bit that encapsulated his coughing-reflex (i.e. his head) had been removed.
For the record chicken-fact-fans, chickens have a significant proportion of their brains located in their spines which is why Mike survived for so long without his bonce.

They can cough which is why Bird Flu is on the march. The only defense is an extra strong garlic sandwich every evening before going to bed. Crush two segments of garlic on a buttered piece of bread-three is better but it can be a bit hot. Add some sliced tomatoes if you can't take your garlic straight like a man should.Make sure your wife has one otherwise there will be ructions if you offer her a goodnight kiss.
Actually there is no defense as yet apart from Hepa filter masks. The vaccine isn't yet readily available. The previous paragraph was just written as a bit of fun. :-)

Don't know about chickens, but when we were camping one year we were next to a sheep that kept coughing and keeping us awake.

Yes chickens are able to cough. I had a chicken that had a throat corrosion, which caused it to kinda swaloow its tongue. it made a sound almost like a whoosh slash vroom sound

They can sneeze, and they cough up food if it gets stuck, so I'm guessing they can...

Definitely. I was in the queue behind one in the chemists the other day. I felt really sorry for her as she said she has nowhere to put her handkerchief.
