Make sure that you purchase some sort of Anti-Virus software like Norton or McAfee.
Here is a free online virus\spyware\malware scanner (under the option called 'Free Tools') that can get rid of most viruses\spyware\malware

Kaspersky also has a good online virus scan at http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner.
If they find anything you have trouble removing just do a web search for the virus name and you should find information on how to do this.
One other step I would consider is going to add remove programs in the control panel and removing any unneeded programs, particularly search bars or adbars etc

AVG is not the best free antivirus option. Plus, you need to protect against spyware too.
I would recommend Windows Defender and AOL's Active Virus Shield. The latter is the best free antivirus option. See:

and scan now - do not send emails or documents
Scan your pc and wait for the result (takes around 20 mins on a new pc) if you have a virus use the programme to delte it

To start off with, run an online System optimisation scan to help you find exactly what the problem is. To do this, go to http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/ and it'll flag up any problems / potential problems with PC, including whether or not you have a virus.
