I think mine are pretty darn spoiled...clean water, weekly gravel vacuums, food 2 x day, treats like blood worms & brine shrimp, no predation, lots of rocks/plants/hiding place, able to reproduce with a high survival rate. It's a fishy heaven!

On the other hand...I wonder if they would prefer (if they could prefer) living in Lake Tanganiyka...or wherever they are originally from.

Or am I just weird for thinking up these kinds of things? :o)

Your thoughts?

Yeah I know what you mean.
I can't ask the fish - well I could, but they won't answer ;) - but I would think that safety and security outweighs the fact that they are captive.

Assuming the fish are well cared for, what is better? Always having predators around you, sometimes not eating for days , getting pieces of you bitten off...

Anyway, that's how I'd like to see it... I sure hope my fish are happy, as happy as fish can be.

Most aquarium fish are known as domesticated. Meaning they have been kept and bred in captivity for so long they are no longer considered wild. Most would not last in the wild. There are however lots of species that are wild caught and can not breed in captivity. I believe these fish would be allot better of in their original environment just the fact that they can not breed in an aquarium tells enough.

I think about it all the time!! I sometimes think I'm cruel for confining a creature in a tank. But like you said they've got it pretty good. Clean water, food, treats, no predators. I don't think you're weird for thinking that, just shows that you're a sensitive, caring person.

well, there are benefits, the captive aquarium doesn't have predators and plentiful of food but unlike the wild, the water conditions are not always perfect and the different water chemistry that the species are not adapted to will weaken it since the rivers or habitats have flowing waters that flow to the ocean and the aquarium always uses the same water and doesnt flow into the ocean.

I have my tank infront of the TV and the TV constantly on Animal Planet to entertain my cats and dog while I'm away... I wonder if my fish are jealous of the ones on television... but then again, if I put them out in my pond I'm quite sure they'd want back into the tiny tank as quick as I could get them in there!

I don't think fish think about things like that.

If they did, I'm sure they would pick living in your tank where it's nice and safe, warm and there is plenty of food and they don't have to worry about getting eaten.

At least they aren't fish food. Which is what they would be if they were in the lake.
