Okay, I'm a sophomore in High School and I'm interested in a Medical career, as an Ob/Gyn to be more specific. But all I know is that you first have to get a four-year degree in...something, and then take four more years of specialization in your field, followed by a few years of residency. Does anybody think that they would be so kind as to explain the process of medical school in excrutiating detail??

It doesn't much matter what you get your four year degree in, but you do need one. I know doctors who were biology majors just like you would expect, but I know others who majored in English. The important thing is that you get really good grades, and some good extracurriculars.

About a year before you plan to graduate from college, start applying to medical programs. They can be very competitive, so don't get your heart set on just one. Your counselors in college will be able to help you with the process, and cultivate good relationships with your professors, their letters of recommendation can make or break you.

Med school will last four years, after that, you'll get assigned to a teaching hospital (usually a county hospital) to do your internship andresidency. You'll pick your specialty at this time, like Ob/GYN. What that means is that you will work in that department of the hospital for two to four years. At this point you will already be a doctor. After you've done your time at the hospital, you can choose to stay there, or go into private practice.

It's a lot of work, but I haven't met anyone yet who regrets it. :)

Well, you were close.... You do 4 years of undergraduate education in whatever field you choose. Make sure you talk to an adviser and you take the right med school pre-requisites. Next you apply to medical school and you go there for four years. After medical school you do three years of residency work. Then, depending on what you want to specialize in you do your internships, fellowships, etc. Hope that helps. I'm not sure on the exact wording of the education after medical school, but you do have to do three years of general medical work, then you do your specialty work.
