Those classes where the professors actually discussed the relevance of various philsophers' ideas have influenced me. Those classes where professors used the class to push their own ideas and/or books did not.
Quite simply, knowing how empiricism and rationalism influenced popular thought historically, and how it continues to influence us today, is very worhtwhile, because we may understand the assumptions we make about truth.
On the other hand, having a crackpot teacher who wrote a book about Frege's Puzzle, which really ranks low on the totem pole of philosophy of language, was plain silly.
But I think many people just try to "get through" school these days, so I wouldn't be surprised to see people say philosophy is alot of hot air.

It depends on how the course is taught. I derived much practical benefit from studying philosophy on an academic level. If nothing else, everyone needs to reason logically and think critically in everyday life.

If someone has no stable base then there is not something on which to hold. In some techniques which could be extra straightforward.

most definitely. even though i do not study on a philosophy course, the media course i am currently studying features work by the likes of eco, adorno, gramsci, plato. i have also recently read books on philosophy just to keep me interested and intrigued. it has allowed me to perceive, view and analyse my life from a anthropological and philisophical perspective and to keep an open mind on everything society and life has to offer to me and what i can offer to society and life in return. this type of knowledge shouldn't be just confined in lecture theatres and in seminars at university but it should also be applied and related to the way we approach our lives and to question everything that is front of us. we should always keep an open mind on everything taking place within and around us, just so we can form our own opinions and come to our own conclusions

The fact that you are asking this everyday life question suggests that it does.
