I'm looking to buy myself the newest iPod. I'm considering getting the black 80GB iPod that supports videos, pictures, music, games, etc. Before I make the move and spend over $300USD on the product, I want to get all of your opinions on it and an insight on any problems that you've had with your own iPod (problems on older iPods are useless to know since they've probably been fixed). Also, tell me all about the cool hacks you've done with your iPod such as installing linux, playing DOOM, etc. :-)
So, should I reconsider my choice or embrace it?
P.S. -- Please don't use Microsoft's Zune as something I should consider since I'm not too fond of the DRM usage and WiFi limitations.

I would recommend that you buy the black 80GB ipod. I have a 30GB ipod, which the only difference between the 30GB and 80GB is the capacity. They're both able to support pics, video, music, games, etc. Just be sure to get a cover/protector for your ipod, since they do scratch easily. One REALLY good thing I was told by the manager of the store where I bought my ipod from was that there is a lifetime warranty on the ipod, SO if anything happens to it, or for some reason it stops working, you just mail it in to Apple and they'll fix it and return it at no charge for life...I'm not sure about shipping and handling, but it shouldn't be more than a couple/few USDs. I do have pictures loaded onto my ipod and they take up such little space. Depending on how much music/videos/pictures etc. you will have on your ipod, should determine what size (capacity size) you'll get...for me 30GB was sufficient. You can also get those special radios that you can hook your ipod to or if you can even play it in your car (if you have a newer car). Hope this helps.

It's cheaper to get the 60GB Video iPod unless you really want the bigger and more expensive 80GB Video version.
That said...
The video iPod is pretty good but ripping and converting DVDs to iPod format is VERY time consuming and may not be legal (had to mention this).
The video is pretty good and so is the audio as I have the 60GB version. The newer 80GB version has supposedly better battery life, a brighter screen and obviously, slightly bigger storage, for the most part. Those are really the Major differences.
I'm able to play videos, say, Star Wars original trilogy, and manage to get through about 2 movies and barely the third before the battery gave out.
The only problems so far...
1. Do NOT press pause or fast forward/reverse Much or else the battery life will decrease or the hard drive spins and May kick out the movie then back to the default menu. Just watch the movie!
2. The 2.5" screen is really Too small for videos as it Must be held 1 foot away, if not closer, to watch the movie clearly esp. if you care about the details.
3. Best to switch off Almost all options but leave the clock on. This will conserve battery life.
4. Sound quality is best with another headphone set besides the included Apple earbuds which is Not very good esp. with bass.
5. I've read that the video versions are better for hacks if one wants to use the Linux version. Use hacks at one's own risk!
6. The games from Apple are too expensive at $5.00 each. It's basically the classic games like Pacman or Tetris for $5.00 each. That's expensive! I've read mixed reviews on the games themselves which Only work on the 5G Video iPods.
7. Some refurb models are available at eBay and other places and it cost less though bidding is Fierce!!!
- For example, currently the bids for 80GB Video iPods are going for about $250-275 on eBay. Savings of $50-100 is good compared to the $350 original price.
- Problem: be prepared to pay shipping costs of $20-50 which wipes out the savings!!
8. May find some discounts before Christmas now at various retail stores but it's not much (for example, 10% off but consider your state's sales tax which may wipe out the savings).
Hope this helps!

I don't really like the Ipods too well. They are just like any other MP3 player only more expensive. Have you ever considered a PSP it does everything that Ipod will do and more. Games, Music, Photos, Videos, RSS feeds, Video RSS, Internet Acces, and more. Plus when you run out of memory you just get another memory stick and use it. 80 gig is really overboard think about it most computers only have about 120 and most people never use all of that space. I would heavily consider the PSP since it cost less money, does more, and you can by more memory when you need to. Plus it has a bigger screen with better graphics.

Looks like you have everything figured out.
If you don't have a limit on how much you are spending and want portable entertainment center - iPod will definitely do the job. You surely can put Linux on it and use it a very low powered PC, you can play games on it (cracked or DLed from iTunes website), and crap loads more things. I don't think there is a limit to what you can do with it. The only thing is - battery is not removable, so you'll have to send it back to Apple to replace it or w/e, but the good news - you have a 1yr warranty on it.

LOL i love MOOFASA!!! certain get an ipod, ipod's are good, sound good, are relaxing, reachable, truly large even as your bored, wanna watch a movie, wanna pay interest to music, wanna view images, wanna play video games, some thing. Get a minimum of both between the hot era ipods that you'll get the hot constructive factors like cool video games etc. listed right here are the options i advise: ~ New era iPod (40, 60, or 80 gig) ~ iPod Chromatic Nano (16 gig) - large and gorgeous!!! ~ in case you opt for the hot era known (vast/fatter one) get white! ~ in case you opt for the Chromatic Nano (iPod Nano 4th gen) you could opt for between many shades, i advise pink because this is the iPod linked with the "i go with mine pink" employer, and you money used to purchase the iPod will be donated to an AIDS battling charity both have extreme def sound, video, and funky new video games etc. in elementary words the Chromatic Nano has constructive factors the position you shake it and it immediately shuffles and also you may also turn the iPod on its section and it is going into cover bypass mode the position you scroll with the help of each and each and every of the albums prepared alphabetically with techniques from artist (both constructive factors must be became OFF) good luck! ...dont eat me
