No, VHS and VCR are not same;
VHS is a particular format of tape about half inch broad and stands for Vertical Helical Scan; commonly used in India and many other countries in PAL state, which is a different speed compared to the one used in US which is NTSC. btw, VHS is also expanded as Video Home System.
These tapes are different e.g. from the DVD standard tape
VCR - there are many brands and several of them are good; Depending on which country you come from, you may wish to go for a particular brand. The standard ones include Sony, National, Panasonic, Samsung, Philips etc.
It is desirable to go for the one that will give you not only good service, but also has good guarantee and after-sales service.
If you are thinking of buying one, it is better to go for DVD players instead of VCRs as this system is getting outdated in many countries already.
Alternatively, go for a dual player, which can play both VHS tapes and also play DVDs. Again the brands that are good include National and Sony

No, VHS is a recording and playing standard for a tape that will play on a VCR. Any brands of VCR nowaday will be fine for your use. VCR technology is already at it's peak so there are not much difference between vcr players except for some extra features.

VHS cassettes can store information up to 6 to 8 hours on an appropriate tape. These tapes are marked as T tapes i.e. T160 is a tape that can record 2 hours in SP mode (highest recording quality)
4 hours at midrange (LP) and 6 hours in the highest compressed mode (SLP).
Buy that VCR now because word is that they are to stop production of them in either 2007 or 2008.
You can find them with a built in DVD burner that will allow you to copy your home made VHS tapes to DVD disk. I have seen them at Walmart.
Also note that most of the electronics in a VCR are build by one of two manufacturers. Most any name brand VCR will work for you.

VHS is the format of the tape that goes into a VCR. Why do you want a VCR? pretty much any, the best one on the market is probably going to cost you a whopping $20 bucks, and I doubt that any of them will have better quality. Question is, will you find one? I haven't seen them in stores for a while.
And stay away from the dvd/vcr combos, they are crap.

VHS is a format of tape - the only one that is really still about (Betamax and Phillips 2000 (IIRC) once used as well)
VCR is the machine that takes the VHS tape :)
Video Cassette Recorder = VCR
VHS = Video Home System / Vertical Helical Scan (the cassette)

Any VCR is good these days. You'll find them next to the 8 track players at Radio Shack.

VHS is also known as 1/2" tape. I worked with 3/4" tape in college video productions. They were huge cassettes. We had one that said Showtime on it from the Showtime movie channel.
