Why can't I put myself at risk for physical harm when I can consume substances that are physically harmful?

P.S. I recognize the benefits of wearing a safety belt and I always remind my siblings to wear their belts, but I find it ridiculous that the police can ticket me for accepting the minimal risk for phsyical harm. Such an arrangement makes me feel "less free" as an America.

By not wearing your seatbelt you put others at risk. Here are 2 different scenarios:

You blow a tire/get hit/etc. and get thrown out of the driver seat. Who's driving your car now?

Your in an accident and your body weight crushes and kills one of the other passengers.

What's so hard about wearing a seatbelt?

No one is forcing you to do anything. It' sup to you if you want to live a long and healthy live. It's ashame that they have to come up with laws about our seatbelt for our own safety. Most car accident deaths could've been prevented if they were wearing their seatbelts. just think about that for a moment

Because you can control what you do to your own body when it comes to drugs and alcohol. You can't control other drivers. It's not just about you putting yourself at risk... it's about other people putting you at risk.
