Follow the instructions on/in the box.
Sit on the toilet with your legs apart. Use one hand to spread your vaginal lips apart, while holding the tampon with the other. Insert it into your vagina, angling toward your tailbone (not UP toward your stomach) as far as your fingers will allow, then press the plunger till the tampon leaves the applicator. Remove the applicator; the strings attached to the tampon should be outside of your body.
When it's time to change (every 4-6 hours) just gently pull down on the strings in a steady motion. Insert a new tampon and you're good to go.
I would recommend using tampons in a Regular size and ones that have a plastic applicator to begin with. Once you've got the basics down, you can experiment with brands, sizes, etc.
BTW, a tampon cannot get lost or stuck. If your flow is too light for the absorbency of the tampon, it might stick to your vaginal wall (which can cause some pain) but this is easily remedied by switching to a lesser absorbency.
Good luck.

Slow down. Tampons are very good to use because it will help the mess that comes with heavy periods. Yes you do push it in the vagina then hold on the outside plastic. Then you will have to throw that part out in the trash. You should put a new one every couple hours than put another one. To take it out you will have to pull on a string that is hanging down. The string comes in all of tampons and its very easy to find and pull out. You could flush the tampons. You should also use a pad because tampons still leave a little bit of mess

There is a string on the end of the tampon to pull it out with. Also your vagina is not that long so you can always reach in and pull it out if you have problems but in all my years of using them I never had to do that. Look at the diagram on how to insert them as they go at a slight angle rather up and back and not just straight up. You change them as often as you would a pad. Choose the absorbency that is right for your period. If you have a heavy flow start with super tampons but if your period is not real heavy then regular is fine. Once you get it inserted your should NOT feel it in place. To remove simple pull on the cord till it comes out.

First test the strings attched to the tampon by givng them a firm tug. If they are firmly attached, you're good to go. Sit on the toilet with your legs spread. Place the tampon applicator at the opening of your vagina and slide it gently inside, as far as it will go. Make sure to point it slightly upward and back, toward the small of your back. You should be holding on to the textured "neck" of the tampon. Take your free hand and gently push down on the applicator stick. This will deposit the tampon where it needs to go. I suggest you wait until the second day of your period, as you will be more lubricated and insertion will be easier. I also find that at plastic applicators are a bit easier for me to insert, as there's less friction than paper. Last, your first time, use a "slim" or "junior" size tampon.

Wash your hands and wet the vaginal opening and the vagina itself with some saliva, making insertion easier.
Unwrap the tampon and pull the string to see if it is well attached.
Spread your legs (squatting or with one foot on the bed or toilet), pull your lips apart and push the tampon in your vagina with your index finger until it won’t go any deeper. Your vagina slants backwards. If you don’t know the angle, then explore your vagina with your finger first, so you’ll know in which direction you have to push the tampon.
You have to relax your PC-muscles, otherwise it’s painful or impossible to insert a tampon (see: vaginismus).
It’s in place if you don’t feel it anymore. If you still feel it you have too push it in deeper.
Never forget to take your last tampon out when your period is over!

Not to worry. The tampon cannot get lost up there. A tampon is designed with an applicator and plunger, you insert the applicator and push the plunger, the tampon will go into place and as you remove the applicator there will be a string hanging from your body, this is how you remove it.

When I was curious about using tampons, I went to this site. It has everything you need when it comes to periods! It has all of the information on tampons that you would need. It's the best site for girls. Also, if you not sure about some of the information, you can always read the packet in the box. That's pretty helpful, too.

it's not hard at all actually I never used one as I'm a Man but I've seen a lot as it's so sexy to see a women change it and when ever my girl friend was in mood I asked her to let me see changing that.
first of all I find out the best is Tampax pearl as it's easy glide after you pushed the applicator in push it in like a sering then pull it out voila ready to go but be note that there would be a string out of your vagina.
the best way to put applicator in your vagina is putting your right foot on the toilet and then glide it in in this position your vagina's mussels are so relax and its kind of so open.
for replacing go to the same position and just pull the string kindly it feels a little good actually my girl friend told me every time after doing that she feels she likes have sex and most of the time she gets wet which it helps to easy glide out and also note that it changes the size about 3 times of original one
so enjoy using the tampon and let me know if you find out the information use full.
