I know you can play some ps2 and ps1 games on the new ps3, but can you play new ps2 games (like madden 07 for ps2 or raw/smakdown for ps2) on the ps3?

Yeah! U can play PS1 games on PS2 and both on PS3 thats just how it works!

Yes, in theory. But if you got one of the first PS3s, I heard that some games will not play on it. I think they're working on fixing this.

In theory, the PS3 SHOULD be backwards-compatible. However, there are some games which will not work with the PS3.
