I would like a laptop because of its mobilty and if the lights go off I can still use the computer, but they are expensive on what they offer and are hard to upgrade. I would like a desktop because they are customizable I could buy a pretty good desktop now and in the future upgrade it easily especially the video card which I most care off upgrading.

If you are after a a system that you can easily move around your house, go for an Imac, but al your decidion, if you will need it for travel, definitely go for a 17"..

For you, a desktop with a cheapie UPS. Your laptop warranty becomes null and void if you swap-out the video card. Plus, most reputable retailers will not sell laptop video cards.

Only buy a laptop if you absolutely need to look cool while doing nothing at the local coffee shop or actually expect to use a computer on the road on a regular basis. For the same $1000 you get twice the computer when you buy a desktop. Also, notebooks tend to break and get stolen more easily.

You answered your own question, you care most about an upgradeable videocard , that makes a PC a better bet unless you shop correctly now and buy a very high end lap top that will have video card functionality. The power thing is neglible. When the power goes off, you are only going to have a small amount of time on the computer before the battery dies and you will lose internet connectivity anyway.

If you're going to be travelling a lot and don't have time to use the computer at home, go with laptop. Otherwise get a desktop since, as you said, they are easy to upgrade, you can do it yourself and are actually cheaper.
