"Spelled" is the more modern usage. It can be used as either a past tense verb ("Tony spelled my name wrong") or an adverb ("'Apple' is spelled a-p-p-l-e.")

"Spelt" is older, and is usually only used as an adverb. ("'Apple' is spelt a-p-p-l-e.")
