No the Red Sox are not our "crazy, rich, drunk uncle."

They are, however, reeling after a season that saw them slip to third place in the division and light years behind the competition in the American League.

The Red Sox brass know full well that the town of Boston isn't fond of "rebuilding years" and as such, there will be no period of lowly records and mediocre talent. Instead the Sox are going full-bore to make sure they right the ship as quickly as possible and baring another myriad of injuries like they suffered last year, this team should be very competitive in what figures to be not only a tough AL East, but a very tough American League as a whole.

As far as Trot goes, this simple factor is production. The Red Sox needed someone who wasn't as fragile and who played both better defense and added some more pop to the lineup. A healthy JD Drew figures to fit everyone of those criteria. Although many people often question his health and desire, he has only missed a considerable amount of time once in the past three seasons and that was after he was hit by a pitch and broke his hand.

Trot's a gamer, but eventually a team comes to a point where they need more than just passion to keep a guy in the lineup. Talent is also big prerequisite.

I hope that answers your question(s).

I don't know about the whole J.D. Drew - Trot Nixon deal, but I can tell you this. If you want a crazy rich drunk uncle, look at Kansas City. They are spending their money too much on not that good players. At least the Sox have a meaning towards their spending frenzies.

Trot Nixon is a gamer, and he put his time in. BUT, he is an average ball player at best, and JD Drew is a great one.

Chow!!

mysterguy, quick question: Are you retarded?

Because it's either that or you are phsycic. Typical Yankee fan, coming up with all of the bull they can to try to fight back against the Redsox.

The redsox aren't your crazy rich drunk uncle, because guess what? Yankee fans may be talkin **** about us, but that doesn't mean they are right. We have a payroll 50m less than the Yanks in 2007, so shut up. Quit bitchin about our spending when you spend enough money more than us to pay for the Marlins salary for the next 4 years.

mystery, tell me, what makes you think 50 years is the magic number? Cuz if you can say that, people could also say that the Baseball Gods are punishing the Yankees for turning baseball into moneyball. Maybe the Baseball Gods are sentencing the Yankees to 172 years without a world series for ruining the game. (Which is what they deserve, twice what the Sox suffered.)

They should rename the Red Sox to the "Boston Yankee wannabes". JD Drew was a total waste of money. I'm so happy for the Sox. Another bad deal! $102M for a triple A unproven nobody from Japan. Watch that ERA blow up in his face. Now who's trying to buy a world series???????????

i am hopeful that red sox fans will at least cease their favorite line "the yankees buy there team every year", as if this is cheating or something. your crazy rich drunk uncle just dropped a lot of cash to TALK to someone. my message to the nation is that you guys better just pray that dice turns out better than hideki irabu.

it won't matter, the Yanks got the Red Sox number just like every year it seems.... i dont expect another Red Sox title for another 50 years at the minimum. Signing Andy Pettitte and possibly Clemens gives the Yankees an all star rotation of Chien Ming Wang, Randy Johnson, and Mike Mussina, and you can't forget about Rivera, and their dominating offense, with the exception of A-rod in the post season. And let's face it, J.D. Drew is never healthy, i say he tears an ACL before allstar break
