It is a sign of impatience.
Also a sign of nervousness.
Can lead to a bad habit as well.
You might not feel nervous while watching the telly, but what thoughts are going on below the surface?

It may have to do with our bodies shedding excess energy. There was a published study back in 2000 that linked tapping fingers or feet, "fidgeting" was the term they used, to a person's body weight. The people who did it were less fat than the average person. The did not draw a conclusion as to WHY certain people do it, just the correlation between the two.

Are you sure you are not anxious at all? I suffer from anxiety, and I still give in to my compulsions even when alone - anxiety doesn't always have to be logical.
It is generally considered a sign of anxiety, although it could also be classes as an obsessive or compulsive behaviour.
If it causes you, or others around you, no problems, I wouldn't worry.
I compulsively shake my leg, but it doesn't bother anyone, so I don't bother trying to stop!

I think its a bad habit. It's like me sighing all the time without meaning to, and people thinking that im sad all the time, and ask me y i am, and i keep having to tell them that its a habit. If u want to stop, tape ure hands together until u stop tapping, or have someone monitor u. lol. My friends had to monitor me to stop my cursing habit, but my bff who monitored me, has recently started cursing alot. lol

Some people rock back and forth when they are in a rocking chair for no reason also. It is something that is not wrong it's merely a habit we have developed and do without giving it any thought. Be happy, you could smoke or do drugs!

I jig my leg up and down really fast, its habit, but I also do it more when im anxious or nervous or feeling generally panicky. Most of the time I don't realise im doing it until someone points it out cos its driving them mad!

I think it slows down an overactive mind. I did it for years, even until my fingers hurt.
