To urge that individuals always opt for internal integrity at the expense of external is to deny the demands and restrictions of social life. To invariably favor external integrity is to embrace a form of collectivism that denies the integrity (and hence the existence) of the self.

Humans need both internal and external integrity since,
if we dispensed with external integrity, we would not be able to function as social beings while if we ignored internal integrity, we would lose our individuality.

Lots of $10 words to say: "If you're too much an individual, you won't have any friends. If you worry too much about what other people think, you won't be yourself."
