Well we just got done reading Great Expectations, now we are reading the Illiad and the Odysessy, next we're reading Romeo and Juliet, then we are going to read Hamlet, after that we're reading The Old Man and the Sea, next The Good Earth, and then the Pearl. Plus I'm learnig Madrin Chinese and French, so I would say we learn things older then ten years. I live in a small town the only play's that are around here are high school play's and they aren't very good most of the time, if I wanted to see a real play I would have to drive for about 5 hours, and I'm sorry but I don't really want to do that, but I do agree with another person our educating system has been focused a lot on passing state test's so we learn stuff that teacher's know that will be on the state test's. By the way my favorite band's= The Beatles and the Sex Pistols, I love Miles Davis and Billy Joel, I don't listen to the hip-hop rap crap. I went to one Britney Spears concert when she actually wore clothing and I was 8.

you know, its funny, but since the internet became the big thing, the youth in our culture only look towards the next big thing. when i was a kid, it was the newest video game system, i remember when super nintendo came out.... it wasnt something eveyone went out and got, it was a big deal, and it had been a lot of years since the last nintendo was out.
now, kids that are 8 have mp3 players, cell phones, etc etc, and they call them all by name! "i just got an ipod nano giga mini blah blah blah", and the cell phones are even worse. i hate when ppl call my phone, the only reason i have it is in case my car breaks down somewhere.
i'm in my early 20's, and i thought that most ppl my age were stupid, but the majority of our kids are getting dumber and dumber these days. none of them have read any books, seen any plays, listened to old rock, old blues, old jazz..... even things like the 3 stooges and the Marx bros....i wouldnt consider it culture, but its still classic.
these days, if its not brand new, they dont even give it a chance. its horrid.

We have a disposable culture, unfortunately--things are too easily discarded. Also, very few people read books, go to plays, listen to anything other than the Billboard Top 40, or travel outside of the country.
Some of us do make an effort, though...

Unfortunately, the American education system has become about preparing for and passing tests. There is less and less value being placed on any kind of arts or cultural education, and less funding for same.

I come from bosnia and I know where every single state of america is. I study american civilisation and a lot of people think negative about american culture, but not all americans are like that.

Unfortunately, talent and works of art are about as important to young people as working hard.
Our young people will continue to look for what is "cool" and popular, and until talent and historical masterpieces are "cool" again, our culture will continue on its downward spiral.

I agree. It seems many people nowadays mistake pop culture for real culture.

its not just the youth.. its the average american..
we are narrow minded and introvered nation.
That is one of the things we are criticized for.
Many americans dont even care or know about their backgrounds
