Holidays can dredge up many old and sad memories of holidays past. Holidays can also be the time when one person in a family gets "stuck" with all the preparation while it seems everyone else just coasts and enjoys. Either way, it is a very stressful time when the true spirit of Christmas can be overshadowed by a feeling of dread.

The holidays is a big empty propaganda. Get past the music, the lights, the food, and the gifts that costs money, you see that the problems in the world are still there. The artifical happiness of getting a gift may make the people around appear to be genuinely happy and you start questioning yourself that you might be weird for feeling depressed. It's the number one time in the US for people to kill themselves, so depression this time of year is not unusual.

It could be because you associate the holidays with something bad that happened previously around the same time of year or perhaps on that specific day. Additionally, as people get older they tend not to spend as much time with their loved ones because of distance or new families. Finally, when someone is generally a pessimist or depressed, the holidays can exacerbate this because most people are filled with “joy” and “happiness.” This was also an issue with me when I spent my first Christmas with my boyfriend and his family. I was not used to the “cheer” and music that filled my ears. I never witnessed any of that growing up. However, the tradition has grown on me and I am less dejected every year.

The holidays are what you make them. If you're depressed, figure out what it would take to make you feel better, and do it. If you need medication, see a doctor. I'm not saying you have to be euphoric, but there is no sense in being depressed now or at anytime. You control your own destiny, so make the changes you want to see in your life.

It's the point of the year that focuses on family and togetherness. You are constantly reminded of your own situation which may not be good, and we start feeling guilty, thus "depressed". In any case....Have a very Happy Holiday Season yourself.

I am not sure, but they are. I think primarily because they are such a pressure packed time to feel that life has been one big bowl of cherries when in reality for many people life surely has been nothing of the kind! I know for myself,I feel so blue during this time of year and I usually feel that I am the ONLY one who is sad.
