Will it still be compatible to record on the same recorder and others?

You usually have to finalize the DVD before it becomes playable in standard DVD players. Once you do this you cannot record onto the DVD anymore. If you use a rewritable DVD you can, but not all DVD players will read DVD-RW's, particularly older players.

Also note that there are two formats currently being used in DVD burners R+ and R -. Most older DVD players can only read a R- . Most current DVD (a few years old) will read either. But in almost all cases for a DVD to be read on Mom's player it must be finalized (closed).
