My advice would go along the same lines as many of the others. As someone who IS in love with sports, I've received many really cool gifts and really lame gifts in my day.
Cool Gifts Include...
-Single Game Tickets
-Event Tickets (ie: All-Star Game/Championship Game)
-Season Tickets
-Jerseys/T-Shirts/Caps/etc
-Television Package (MLB Extra Innings/NFL Sunday Ticket/etc)
-Books About Their Favorite Sport/Team/Player
-Gift Certificate to Sporting Goods Store
-Gift Certificate to Online Store (mlbshop.com/nflshop.com/etc)
-Trip to the Hall of Fame
-Trip to Visit Multiple Stadiums
Those are just some ideas that came to mind. I'm not sure what you have to spend, but clearly some of those are far more reasonable than others. Just use your best judgement and go with whatever will make your sports fan the happiest.

Well it depends on how much money you want to spend. Around $150 can get you the new "Fatheads" (if they're a football fan).
An authenticJersey from espn.com will also cost you about the same.
A more cost effective approach would be a DVD of lets say, the NBA championships. Or perhaps a foldout chair, silverware, dishset with their favorite team. Hope this helps.

They sell plaques that cover a sports figures entire history. They aren't too expensive. You can get them on eBay. I've bought some for my husband and he loved them.
