I own 2 guinea pigs, have only 2 chicken left - the others died of old age, and am owned by 2 cats rescued from the Cats Protection. Choosing the cats was the hardest part as I wanted to take all of them home! In the end, the two cats, not related, chose me by their reactions.

If you really want a pet, and have an animal in mind, you will find that you will be chosen by that animal. It has happened to me and recently, it happened to a friend who wanted a cat but was chosen by 2 brothers who are now ruling her.

At any given time I could have up to 5 dogs. I like Hounds (basset, beagles & blood). First you need to know what kind of life style you live. If you go out often -then maybe a cat would be better suited ( since they can handle solitude better). Cats are great pets but have very strong personalities. some are good lap pets & others are independant - just like people you don't know how they think and you will have to adjust to that one animals needs. Dogs are great too, just need more human intervention. You are the master and they need you to servive. Picking a dog is a bit easier - dogs tend to have the same personalities within their breeds. Yet you might get a rebel, who doesn't know how his breed should be. Look at the dogs around you and see if you like a certain type. then read up on that breed to see if it will fit into your life. Remember its a long term commitment so be patient. when you are ready to get a pet, look into your local shelters. they have some great animals that need a good home.

I've had pets all my life and usually end up with rescues. My cat was from a stray litter that was brought into the shelter. When I got her, she was sick, underweight and had a viral infection in her eyes. It took us several weeks to nurse her back to health. She is now 16 years old, and still spry and active.

Shelters and animal rescues are in my mind, the only responsible place to get a pet. There are so many animals that need homes that to buy one seems unconscionable, especially considering that many animals that don't find homes will be euthanized. And you will be surprised at what kind of animals end up at a rescue. No matter what pet you are looking for, there is probably one out there that needs to be rehomed.

I have a hamster. I chose him as I'd had several hamsters before and have always enjoyed keeping them as pets. Mark, my first hammie, was the first pet my parents allowed me to have when I was little :)

I also have a cat, as I don't think a house is a home without a cat. Again, thats from my childhood - I've always had a cat about the place.

I've also kept fish, gerbils, gineau pigs and a rabbit. I would consider having any pet I felt I could look after well :)

Ok, I have 24 pets:
1 dog rescused from an abusive owner, a cocker spainel, I love dogs and need an excuse to get out and walk in the bush

10 fish 7 given to me & 3 bought, my kids love fish (nemo), plus they look great.
1 snake, a childerns python, I got him because his owners couldn't keep him any more and I'm a sucker for unwanted pets
4 hermit crabs, fun little pets my kids wanted
3 fire bellied toads (1 rescued) my kids wanted frogs and the dwarf ones that live in the fish tank would get eaten
1 newt, rescued with the toad, my 3 yr old sons favorite pet

2 cats - 1 I got because I though he was pretty and thought my husband would like him. The other (gray little girl) we found by a dumpster on the way home from buying the other one.

3 Ferrets- 1 little girl I just thought she was so cute and had to have her, 1 little boy, I got him for my son, I picked him because when I put my hand in the ferrets cage at the pet store he grabbed on to my finger and wouldn't let go, so I thought he was tuff enough to put up with my boys. 1 little boy, I got him cause he looked pure white but didn't have red eyes, I was wrong when they got him out of the cage I saw he had a small black strip going down his back.

There all wonderful and we love them all just the same.

I have three cats and two fish

The cats kept mutliplying. We've had kittens too but found homes for them as otherwise I would start to look a bit odd with so many cats. Three is starting to get a bit freaky

The fish have drastically reduced (not from cat pilferring I might add) We did have a pond with 18 in there but something got in the water and we only managed to save 2.

I currently have three cats. I've had animals all my life, but am living in my first place and can't have dogs. Daisy was a farm cat that I got after my first cat died. She was really lively and fun. I got Katie because Daisy was lonely when I was gone. She was really pretty and she was a cuddler. The third cat I was given because her previous owners were getting divorced and neither one could have her anymore. She is a little grumpy and she is already 8, so she would have been put down.

Four dogs... I didn't choose them... three of them were my boyfriend's mums and she died early in the year. Then two of them had puppies and I kept one.. So I chose one and three others chose me :) Otherwise I would never EVER have dreamed of owning a chihuahua...let alone four of them! Although it does also mean that I have my absolute favourite which probably isn't good.

Other than that I have tropical fish that my mum off-loaded onto me when she moved house and never claimed them back... two goldfish and another tropical fish tank that I am babysitting for my brother... he should be taking those back at some point though...
