Yeah, the federal law prohibits satelite from carrying local stations out of your market area.

The basic reason is this:

There are 2 types of advertising commercials; National and Local. The local slots are designated to take up a certain time allotment on certain stations.

On national TV stations, like CBS or NBC, these local commercials are only broadcast in that area.

The reason why you can't have a local TV Network out of your area is due to this advertising law. Networks didn't want local advertising to reach a national market without paying for it. Thus, why you only have your local market now and not something from another area.

National, non-advertising Networks, like HBO or Cinimax, can be received legally on your Satelite. They don't carry local advertising.

I hope this explanation helps.

It's all in the coding. All the signals are actually sent to your dish, but they electronically filter out which ones you can and cannot get based on an electronically stored permissions list within the Dish unit itself.

Some satellites may also only carry certain signals feeds and not carry some others as well.
