The sounds you describe are typical for a universal joint problem, and as the joint gets worse you will start to "feel" the joint disintegration, until it goes all together. and when that happens. most of the time the drive shaft gets bent when it hits the pavement, there was one time a 1956 Chevy was brought into a shop I worked at and the drive shaft had bent back along itself and was wrapped around the broken transmission rear housing...just a word to the wise...the joint is not that expensive, and not that hard to replace....there is a technique to it but it's really not that hard.

The noise you described is that of a rusting out u joint. Check for rust leaky out of the joint .If you replacing one do yourself a favour replace them all be it 2 or 3 >If ones gone now the others are not far behind.Goes with an aftermarket one as GMs or pricey and do not come greasable.

lot of vibration, rumbling. As mentioned above, if you can manually turn the driveshaft, then it needs replaced

replacement isn't too hard if you have a press, the factory ujoints have those nylons rings you have to melt out but be careful not to be too close to the exit holes b/c of hot discharge can burn you severely

Basically what they all are saying is, "If it sounds like your driving a really fast tank, then its your U-Joints."
