no reason, it goes back and forth. in the pre-1970's the NFL was vastly more stronger, but a few years around 1968 or 69 the AFL started getting really good (1970 they merged into the NFC and AFC)

the AFC is not ALWAYS better
in the 80's and early 90's the NFC won 13 straight superbowls, and the AFC were seen as just bad. now it shifted back in favor of the AFC. the thing is we never know, 5 years from now the NFC might be the one where 10-6 is not enough to get into playoffs and the AFC will be the ones with wildcards with 8-8's.

Since 1970 the AFC has won 51.5% of the interconference games while the NFC leads the Super Bowl (including 1966-1969) competition 25-22. The conferences are essentially equal with hisorical swings in the Super Bowl (AFC 8-2 1970-1979), then NFC 13 straight wins, and now AFC going 10-6 since Denver edged Green Bay. As of today the AFC leads tne NFC 15-7.

Because the nfc has tough divisions.
Like the toughest division in sports the NFC EAST.
The NFC South is also a tough division.
The AFC West is the only tough one in the AFC.
Well the AFC teams are not as beaten up by division rivals the NFC teams are.
Because the divisions so tough the teams are wore down and plagued with injuries when they make the playoffs. Now imagine if a healthy atlanta or new york giants team played the denver broncos or chargers in the superbowl. Well the chargers will have a tough task playing any of those healthy teams.

Actually, it's not. they've only been better since Denver beat the Pack. But if you remember, before that, the NFC had the NFL on lock down with the Packers, 49ers, Cowboys, Giants, Skins, and the Bears won 13 Superbowls in a row. As a matter of fact, the NFC has won 21 bowls compared to 19 for the AFC.

Always is a bit of a stretch, but the current reign of AFC teams over their NFC counterparts is definitely more than an anomaly. The Rams and Bucs won within the past ten years, but it has been mainly AFC teams such as the Ravens, Patriots, Steelers, and Broncos that have really excelled the past 10 SuperBowls.

Rules changes that protect the quarterback, as well as place further limits on contact in the secondary have promoted the passing game, and the AFC is full of teams built upon passing attacks, whereas the NFC has a greater propensity toward teams that play physical defense.

Did that help?

Well the NFC has won recently in 2006 if I recall. The NFC may have made 17 roster changers in 2 days but the AFC had to make changes at the QB position (Brady, Rivers and Manning) and they did not pick worthwhile replacements. I would much rather see Palmer and Big Ben go to the Pro Bowl than Vince Young and David Gerrard. This game is looking like an NFC victory this year.

It is just the trend right now for AFC. 10 years ago NFC was way better.
Over the years the AFC teams finished in low spots and got great draft picks because of it. Now those drafted players are hitting their prime.
10 years from now the NFC will reign once again.

Not too long ago it was the other way around. The Cowboys, 49ers, Redskins, Packers, Vikings, and Giants dominated in the late 80's to mid 90's. All the AFC had to offer was the Bills, Oilers, and the Dolphins. There are better teams in the AFC now because the players see which ones they are sign with them. Everyone wants to be on a winning team.

If you look at the Superbowl records you would be wrong as the NFC has won more of them, if you lookin Pro Bowl that would not count as it is an exhibition game. As far as better teams I would say just the fact that it is just harder divisions. Look at the NFC west, a team might take the division on an 8-8 record. Where the AFC west has a lot of wins.
