the belief system called science attempts to answer, for the people of our own time, the same things religion (or what has become religions in our time) attempted to answer thousands of years ago (arguably to people without the same knowledge base as we have now).
both systems tend to be faith based and both tend to 'check out' within their own systems (what i mean by this is that, based on the laws of a particular religion, its tenets will prove true. similarly, within the laws of science - which are generally based on the 'scientific process' - its tenets prove true). one might argue that our scientists are the most learned people of our time, but to propose that this differentiates from religion would be to ignore that in other times our religious leaders have been the most curious and well educated of their time.
i think it's hard for anyone born after the 19th century to accept that 'science' is simply a belief system because the conclusions at which our scientists and researchers arrive make pretty good sense in the context of our current world view. that said, there was a time, i understand, when the world view dictated that the earth was flat and someone who proposed otherwise would be considered a little nutty (and, given that 'flat' is a subjective term, i could argue that such description might still be more accurate than 'round'. 'not entirely flat' might be best.)
regardless, i tend to be a believer in the findings of our educated scientists, but i think it prudent to remain clear that, very likely, in another thousand years even the most uneducated person will consider my well intentioned belief system laughably naive.

the nature of science is deeply planted in search for FACTS, the TRUTH that governs that world's makeup & universe alike.
the nature of religion is more on INSIGHTS, the TRUTH that explains the world's purpose & universe alike .
both are entangled in Human emotion & mentality.
in the end, both fails.
Science in multitude of theories, religion in heavy sentimentality.
BOTH ARE FLAWED.
