There are two types of disability that are referred to as "Social Security". One type, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is for those people who have worked long enough and paid enough into the system. One credit is earned during each quarter of the year in which a certain amount of money is earned, and it usually requires 20-40 credits (and to be disabled) to get this type of Social Security. Your assets and household income aren't taken into consideration when they figure your benefits.

The other type is Supplemental Security Income (SSI). THis is basically a welfare program for those who have not worked long enough under SSDI to get benefits. They take all assets and household income into consideration. If you get married, you may lose your benefits.

You should contact the Social Security office to find out. I do know that they factor in the spouses income and if they receive social security benefits also you will both be added to one deal and get a set amount per month. However. I stress that you contact your local SS office for more information, and to ensure accuracy.
