I left my laptop on standby earlier today and when I came home I went to go on it only to discover the graphics are there but the screen is very dark. I have tried switching it off and on again to no avail, has anybody any ideas what's up, thanks in advance.

Try adjusting the brightness settings usually using a key labled with just F or FN and then a key that usally has a picture that looks like the sun or a light. It would help if I knew the model you have. You may also find the brightness setting in your BIOS. Reboot and press what ever key your model uses to enter the bios. F2 or Del normally. Then look around in there. DO NOT change anything else unless you know what you are doing.

If this does not work, try just pulling the power cord and then the battery and so that it shuts down completely. Then put them back and see what happens.

If this still does not work, you may have blown either the backlight or the backlight inverter. Not good. You may be able to find the parts and fix it yourself. Once again this depends on the model. Some are very very easy, and others are not "reasonably" possible.

What kind of Laptop? Try unplugging the power cord to see if the screen gets darker - power save function. Then plug it back in and it should get significantly brighter. I have seen, on some laptops where that function gets reversed - unplug and it gets brighter. Anyway, if that happens, then try the FN and brightness control buttons to try and turn it up. Hope this helps...

Is your battery weak? My screen goes darker on a lowe battery. Otherwise shut it down, power off, pull the battery put for 10 seconds, push it back in, power laptop on with AC power.
