If it simply the question of definition, quite simple (not easy though, for, understanding it is only through experience !)...
Remove everything that you got... the name, the body, habits, thoughts, memories, knowledge etc... what ever remains (the pure witnessing aspect of self) ... it is the ' I '
"Know thyself" actually may not be hinting at that kind of depth.. it is enough to know how we came about to be this kind of a person, our past, instincts, impulses, habits, mind etc.. to be able to function better with deeper acceptance of the situation, with ability to adapt ourself with a better self-awareness.

"Know Thyself" is not a message; it's a plan, it's a process. It can take years.
Start with a personality assesment like Briggs-Meyers.
Move onto a temperament analysis, like Taylor-Johnson.
As you get to know yourself better, you can see why do the things you, what movtivates and what hold you back. You can use this knowledge to become the best person you can be.

"Who am I" is a wonderful question. You are fortunate that this question came to you.
No one can really make you realize who you are, but people who have realized it can give some guidance.
There is a wonderful booklet called "Who am I?" downloadable from the Downloads section on http://www.ramana-maharshi.org/
It has nothing to do with religion so it won't piss you off pointing to some scriptures etc. Very though provoking. A must read.

The assense of all the philosophies run around the question "Who am I". The very term "I" brigning all types of egos and selfishness in the society. Unless we cultivate "we" we can not ensure social harmony.
Indian philosophy gives more detailed and indepth answer to this question than any other. "Iam also part of the creation, the Almighty" isthe essense of it. Doctrine of Maya gives true picture.
Western science can not address this question at all.

You are who you say you are. Finding yourself mainly includes finding your source. where does your life source flow from? what i mean by that is what makes you think, feel, experience the taste feel...pleasing to the senses. when you can answer that you can begin to find yourself.
what makes me feel?
WHY?
what makes me smile?
why?
What forces my senses to act/react?
why?
why do i like these things?
(do these things define me)
of course they do.
do i really like this or do i think i should like this?
do i really want to do this or do i feel obligated?
do i like my (NOUN) or is this for outward appearance?
so on and so forth...
it will help you to look deep in the mirror and to tell yourself the truth. people would rather lie to themselves than tell the truth for fear of ( not being socially accepted).
Do i really like these new shoes or am i just getting them to be "in fashion"?
could i be happy with myself if i were the only one alivE AND HAD NO ONE ELSE TO APPEAL TO?
surprisingly enough you will find a lot out about yourself asking yurself these questions or like ones.

Who are you? I don't know. hehe. But more seriously, you are what you do. What you think. Who you speak to. How you speak. How your surroundings look (house, friends, family, etc.) The decisions you make, makes you who you are. If you analyze those things, you might have an easier time knowing who you are.
