For all you people above who think $0, you would be wrong. The government does give stipends and cash to mothers in Sweden. It's a socialistic government and everyone gets perks. If you need a wheelchair, the government gives it to you, etc. There is a downside, though. Nobody works any harder than they feel like (try getting good help in the department stores, for instance) because they don't need to do it. They get what they need no matter how hard they work. And they have socialized medicine, so if they are sick, they get free care, but the government tells them which doctor they must see and how long they must wait and sometimes they are forced to use hospitals 2 hours from their homes to get care.

Oh the Scandinavians are very good to mothers! My sister in law is Finnish and went home to have both her babies. The government not only gave her some money (sorry don't know how much) but a whole heap of baby goodies like baskets, clothes, blankets etc.

Depends on what her income was before the baby was born, since that's what maternity benefits are based on in Sweden.

To Sally from above; Sounds like a TOP country to me! Money for nothing( except giving birth!),Poor service in department stores; at least there are department stores instead of big supermarkets thinking the`re department stores with staff who don`t know their a rse from their elbow;and travelling for only 2 hours to the hospital! Blimey is that all! In the NHS you have to travel that far to get to the Doctors surgery if you don`t live in London, and when you get to the hospital your put on a trolley in the corridor! Right , now I`ve got that off my chest, pass me my Duffle coat I`m off to Lapland--I`m sure Santa needs a hand at this time of year!
