what do u think? u think they buy a fresh new tree every year? wouldn't it be pretty hypocritical to be all "green peace" and then chop a tree?
i have a very lifelike plastic tree.
isn't it time for everyone to make the transition?

My family has a number of environmentalists and they do buy christmas trees - however they are live trees and they are planted outside after the holiday.

There are atleast three ways to get away with it as an Enviornmentalist.

1. Grow the Trees, cut them down,.. they are your own responciblity since seedlings or whatever. You have to care for them and deal with destroying something you have raised or finding other ways without killing or mameing them.

2. Plant so many trees or Seedlings and help them out for each tree you cut down. Say you ensure atleast 25 make it through the first year of being planted in the ground.

3. Get a tree that's not so giant and going to be replanted roots and all. Maybe a smaller tree then most people expect but you know where it's going after the season... maybe it needs someone to care for it until spring when the ground is more easily dealt with. Some times these end up on the person's property.

4. Use the plant outside >.> Have it stay out there... decorate it. Whatever.

So there are atleast four ways they can get away with haveing a Christmas Tree,.. it's up to the indiviual person's belief and where they draw the line.

I know a lot of environmentally friendly types that buy or cut fresh trees. The answer I get when I asked the same question you pose here is things like "I like to be reminded of what Christmas was like when I was little" , "If you plant a tree each spring you're not really removing one from the environment", "It's not hurting the environment if you mulch it later to use for fertilizer in an organic garden" kind of interesting. As for artificial trees, no thanks, I like the real thing.

most Christmas trees are farmed - each tree that gets chopped down gets replaced, and the trees are planted specifically for this purpose. So it's not like you're going out and stealing some fluffy forest creature's home, and it's not like you're destroying the last rainforest.
And most used trees, after the season is over, get recycled into valuable mulch.
Tree farming is called a "sustainable practice"- something any responsible environmentalist is familiar with.

They may as well buy them-they're already dead! It's not like they're killing them. And it's not like we're deforesting the wilderness to get Christmas trees. These trees are specifically grown on a farm to be nothing but Christmas trees when the time comes so get a tree and enjoy it! Merry Christmas!

If you buy a real tree that was grown specifically to be purchased as a Christmas tree, and it was grown organically, AND you recycle it properly after the holidays (think mulch for your garden), that is the best thing for the environment.

Fake trees are made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC, otherwise known as vinyl), one of the most environmentally offensive forms of non-renewable, petroleum-derived plastic.

ummm, no thanks...i love having a real tree in my house...people plant christmas tree farms every year just for this so its not like we're stealing trees from a public place. new ones are being planted to replace the ones people put in their house anyway.

also, i would NEVER put a fake tree in my house...it may look real to you but i can tell the difference...and besides, it doesnt have that fresh christmas tree smell that reminds me so much of christmas

I heard that they buy trees that can be replanted (still have roots and dirt in a "bag"). I, personally, use an artificial tree. I think many others do as well. It would be hypocritical if they didn't.

I also heard that Sting, who is very much into the environment, paid for a giant pine tree, so he could decorate it.

This probably sounds cheesy but Growing up if we ever actually had a Real Tree in the house there was a 90% chance my dad had planted it outside before christmas :) Christmas morning was a pile of presents and decorations heaped in the corner :)
