try going to the website of the company that manufactures it, and update drivers, that is the most common problem with any hardware.

I would ask you to ignore the responses that you've so far received. I believe what you have is a DVD/CD-RW drive. This means that it will read DVDs and read and write CDs. This is why your drive is stating that there is no disc present when you insert a blank DVD-R. (The drive is either looking for a DVD that has data written to it already, or is looking for either a CD with data already written to it, or a blank CD.)

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but no amount of downloading and installing drivers is going to make your drive into a DVD writer.

If you wish to write to DVD-R/DVD-RW you'll need to purchase a new DVD-RW drive. (DVD-R, if you didn't know, means DVD Recordable, meaning that you write to the disk once only, whereas DVD-RW means DVD Re-Writeable, meaning that you can write and rewrite to the disk, upto about 1,000 times.)

Check on the manufacturer website if they have an upgrade firmware that will support DVD-R. If not and your burner dont support burning DVD-R at all there is not much you can do but buy another one. Today mostly DVD burner comes really Cheap.
