I always thought it was a reference to the story "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens in which Ebeneezer Scrooge is visited by three ghosts (four if you count Marley). If you read the original (or watch the version with George C. Scott in it) it's kind of creepy.

Perhaps they are refering to the ghosts in "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens? Funny you should ask this, as my husband I were just discussing this very question the other day.
