I was going to buy a Wii but I saw on www.wiihaveaproblem.com that wrist straps are breaking left and right and damaging peoples TVs? I don't want to break my new LCD TV. Also it looks like some people are getting black eyes because of Wii?

Because of where I work; I was able to get a Wii easily for my son's birthday. I've played the sports games with him in front of our large TV and have not had a problem. I did have some concern when I noticed he did not have his wrist strap on; so I showed him how to tighten it up. We play the baseball game several times and when you pitch the ball you are swinging the controller straight at the screen to some extent. I just checked the strap out and I can see why it may be a problem. The elastic cord the connects the controller to the strap is probably the problem. It is pretty thin and I can see how it may come a part after much use or abuse. Also, there are plastic slides that tighten the strap to your wrist. That has to be secure and resecured after using it for a length of time. If these precautions are taken and the person playing the games does so away from lamps and other objects; there should be no problem. My son is 14 and gets a little upset when losing games; but he doesn't hit things. We've had our Wii about 2 weeks and played it in front of two different TVs and had no problems. But just in case, I think I'll ask my son to play in front of his TV in his room. Bottom line, by the time you buy one cords and straps will be stronger and your TV should out live your Wii. It's a great game system.

I wouldn't exactly characterize this situation as "straps are breaking left and right". I've had the system since launch and have yet to do anything that damaged something. I've also had 6 and 7 year olds playing with it and they didn't damage anything either, although they came close a couple of times- getting too close to the tv and flailing their little arms all over the place.

The problem is not so much with the system as it is with how people are playing. It seems that there are quite a few people that lack the common sense to know that they could potentially cause damage to something with this device. For me, I saw it coming when I watched the kids playing it- so I took the necessary precautions, like putting a coffee table in front of the tv so they wouldn't get too close. I also bought the silicone remote protectors for the remotes, and they help give everyone a better grip.

Taking a few logical precautions is all that is necessary to enjoy the Wii without damaging your tv or anything else for that matter.

As long as you grip the wii-mote tightly, don't let go of the wii-mote, and don't flail around like a monkey on Red Bull, you shouldn't even need the strap.

But you should wear it, just in case.
