My guess is that certain publishing companies would be happy to have someone with a degree in business or science or computers, etc.--just so long as the person also can read and write.

There are alot of publishers who really don't have an English degree, but maintain a great publishing industry. For instance, Aunt Jurila, publisher of Dinner without Father and many other adult novels. She attended college for a year in a half in business administration but droped out because of her pregnancy. After 2 years of dedication to being a publisher, she achieved her goal within months.

Publishing is a tough industry to make a living at. You many not be very happy making the wages they offer to entry level people after spending 4 years in college.

If you have (for example) a science background, it may help to go into a technical publishing field for a few years until you have the experience to carry over into a different field.

Easiest way is to start with a publication that has to do with the field in which you do have a degree.
