Probably just an old wive's tale. Although, I don't think I'd want to be the zookeeper who answer's the door when Jamie and Adam from "Mythbusters" come knocking . . .

Elephant eyesight is poor, and the eyes are small in relation to the
enormous head, which can turn just slightly from side to side. This limited
movement results in restricted side vision, and an elephant must move its whole
body to broaden its range of vision. So I think that elephants are afraid of mices because the mices can sneek up on them very easily and the elephants don't like that because the mices like to use those big ole ears to have their poker parties in....at least the male mices do. The female mices don't think to look for them there. And can you imagine having a passle of mices in your ears, playing poker and smoking cigars????

This article has a funny twist. At Ringling Bros. circus they tested this myth. The mice like the hay. The results of the test were that the elephants were more likely to inhale the mice than fear them!

I think it could be true, I mean elephants can't move all that fast, but mice can. It might spook the elephant b/c he can't keep track of it. Just a thought...who knows?? Merry Christmas!! :)

Yup, because a mouse might crawl up an elephant's trunk and then the elephant wouldn't be able to breathe and then they'd die. That's why they're afraid of them.

Afraid of mice is a bit strong. However, they are wary of them because they are able to crawl up their trunks and cause major damage and discomfort.

They are afraid of mites not mice. It is just a misunderstanding based on a spelling error.

Last time I made a survey between African elephants, they rejected this rumor entirely.

lol, i think that elephants are so big and mice so small they most likely don't even know that mice exist

OR... they could be best friends (think disney's Dumbo)
