I wonder why dads are hard to shop for? they usually say they don't want anything. Try and ask him 5 times what he wants and then he will figure something out... I
'm pretty sure every dad in the world drinks coffee in the morning (this is usually the same with mom too) so for a change you could get him some starbucks coffee beans in a bag or a coffee kit, they sell it at alot of places like walgreeens and target. I guess you would buy it right before christmas so it's fresh.
See if any of his stuff is worn out so that you can replace it- slippers, wallet, watch. If you know what kind of music he likes, you could burn him a mixed cd with oldies lol. My dad watches law and order and other shows- you could find him his favorites on dvd. I would say a cookbook for grilling and things but that is more like a hobby thing, maybe you could get him that to start a hobby!

Make a list of the 10 things you like or admire most about him. Type it up in a creative way (maybe add some hand drawn illustrations) and frame it. Or if you are more creative, write a poem about how much he means to you, funny memories, etc. and frame it. It takes some effort but it is a gift from the heart that he will always value.

In our family, each parent has a hard cover blank journal and for each holiday (birthday, Christmas, Fathers' Day, etc) each kid chooses a Bible verse, writes it in the book, with a short explanation of why they chose it, and a colorful illustration. It is so much fun to look back at verses and drawings from past years - especially as the kids get older. It is a great keepsake.

My dad is the same. I like to listen throughout the year for ANYTHING he mentions that he likes. For instance, I went to a special store to buy him Mexican Coke that does not have high-fructose corn syrup. It's the only Coke he will drink. Or I get him special fruit he used to eat when he lived in Germany. This year I got him gift certificate for Ticketmaster. Now he can go to sporting events or musicals...anything. And I plan to go with him to the event he chooses, so it will be a family outing as well. Good luck!

maybe you can help him find a hobby. think of what he has and what he doesnt have, then think of him and what kind of person he is. your father sounds like a very laid back kind of person that just likes to enjoy the simple things in life. try some thing that is just simple but you know that he'll love. ask his friends, your mother and any body that loves him as much as you do and i'm sure that they will hep you come up with some thing.

Get him a nice frame and find a picture of the two of you doing something in the past that you enjoyed. Insert the picture you find into the nice frame, and he'll love this!

Another idea........Get a couple movie tickets, and a dinner for two and take your Dad at to a movie and dinner, I'm sure he would appreciate this as well! Dads love to spend time with their kids!!

Get him food or incense or something that can be "used up." It's really tough to deal with those particular items that just hang around for eternity just because they are xmas gifts.
And gift cards imply no will to give thought.

The most thoughtful thing would be a poem (read aloud, of course).

My Dad is a similar pain for presents and when asked what he wants he always says nothing. One year I bought him a Ticketmaster gift card so he could choose a show to take my Mum and him to and another year I got him a gift card to go on a hot-air balloon ride. I think that it was so weird he at least appreciated the thought.

How about a book on hobbies? Maybe he'll find something interesting and pursue it.
