I read about it from a cheatcode website but I cannot figure out exactly how because the instructions make no sense

OK. I saw this one on tv. First all you have to do is get to the end of the level of world 1-2 and when you get to the pipe just jump on top of it intead of going through it. Then you break the first thre bricks to the right but leave the one to the left alone. Then go to the edge of the pipe facing toward the left, do a crouch jump and while in the air press -> on the d-pad and If you did it rignt it would look like you are walking thruogh the wall. Keep moving to the right and you will end up at the warp pies place. Take the first pipe to the left and you should be in negative world 1. And don't get freaked out if you can't pass the level. Thats because you can't. You'll just keep repeating the same level over and over agaian.

World 1-2, as big mario, in front of the pipe that takes you up. Break all the bricks cept the one that is right next to the pipe going up.
Face left, duck down, jump backwards and push into the 1 remain brick (careful not to break it)
You dont want to try to jump over it but sort of glitch the game and jump through it. Eventually Mario will walk through the brick and the wall to the room with the 3 pipes leading to other levels. Dont walk all the way into the room. Just far enough to take the first pipe you come to. Which would be the one on the left.

umm...in world 1-2, before the pipe that takes you to the castle, you're supposed to break the brick thats second before the big wall of bricks. then you stand on the edge of the pipe facing left...you have to be big mario by the way. so at the edge of the pipe, you bend down looking left, and you jump into that hole you made, kinda jumping to the right, and eventually you'll make it.

But world 1 is the start of the game if that's any help.
