for nothing more than an answerer saying that they are liberal or conservative? Shouldn't rating someone down be used for wrong answers, or things that are totally off topic?

I don't give "thumbs down" jsut for disagreeing with me. I do use them when someone is bashing the other side or using discrimanatory/hateful remarks from either side of the fence even if their comment is techncally on-topic. If I disagree with you, but you make your point using rational, logical points, then you're fine with me.

What is the purpose of the rating system? I can't see any other purpose than giving a thumbs up or down on someone's opinion. There's an abuse button to push for answers that are inappropriate. I think it's just a tool that lets people say "I don't agree with you." Since we aren't supposed to take part in "chatting," this is a substitute for actual commentary.

It is frustrating. I only try to use thumbs down to indicate that I think an answer is wrong. For instance, someone stated that their young child had permanent marker on his face. Someone else recomended using turpentine to take it off. I didn't think the person asking the question should use turpentine on a child's face, so I gave the answer a thumbs down.

I usually get a huge number of thumbs downs. I respond to political questions using fact and logic. Generally, it's been my observation that those who ask most of these questions have preconceived ideas and are looking purely to bolster their position. My answers generally show them the errors in their thought processes -- if they have thought. People don't like being told they're wrong and hate it even more when you show them the facts. Last week, I had one asker threaten to shove my diploma up my "F____ @ss. He's a hateful Muslim who sees nothing wrong with murdering Jews and Christians.

I don't even know why all the thumbs in the first place. People are intitled to their opinion, but alot of them just don't get the question, so they down you. I think they should remove the thumb rating and for those people that do rate down, they shouldn't answer the question.

Yes, but people view right and wrong differently, so... that's why we rate thumbs down.

You have to believe what they believe. If, they live a dull and pointless life and you are happy and joke, you get a thumbs down. If, a girl ask; "Am I fat"? and you tell her the Truth you get a violation.

I agree with you on this!!! Its only each individuals opinions if you don't like the answer move on to the next. Unless yeah its a offensive answer or has nothing to do with the question.
