Santa Claus is a take off of a real person, Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas was a bishop who put food, fire wood and small trinkets on the door step of the poor. Being a bishop he wore red. So now Santa Claus wears red.

Red originated as a christmas color because it represents the blood of christ. Candy canes are red and white because the red represents the blood, and the white represents the body/ or bones, or christ. And....its shaped like a cane to represent the shepards that were "watching their flock by night..."
