Hi Malasia

I Think the easiest thing for you to do would be to search on ebay for a laptop cd drive compatible with your laptop

you say plug in your cd rom from the computer? is it an external usb cd drive? if so you could do that but the laptop will have to have a floppy drive and you will need to make a floppy boot disc containing usb drivers so the cdrom drive will be activated during boot mode

If you can give some more details on the laptop (make, model), you will probably get better answers. Some older laptops do not support USB-CDRoms as a boot device (necessary to run the installation program).

Also, though you might be able to run it off the desktop CDRom (I assume your are talking about connecting the PC's with cords), it takes a fair amount of experience to properly configure the direct cable connection between the 2 machines and then run a network installation.

Bottom line your easiest solution is to get the correct CDRom for the machine from eBay or Craigslist and then get an installation CD for the operating system you want.

I am not sure this will work but it may. Get a hold of the company who puts out the computer. Get the model number etc. Could be you can ask for the system disk but you may have to have the code listed somewhere on the computer to install it.Make sure you ask for floppy system as you do not have a CD drive. Call and ask, it cannot hurt and the disk will probably cost you about 20 dollars. The thing of it is this though, a system disk should include all drivers as well that came on the system so if anything is changed (cards in the computer) the disk may cause conflicts.

Also, the system backup for said disk should be on another drive in the computer so go into dos and make sure it exists or the system disk will not work.

The other thing to do but this will cost more is to get a Windows disc but that will be at least a hundred or more depending on which one you choose. Again you will have to track down drivers if they are not detected by the new operating system. Of course you will have to have a CD drive to do this. Good luck!

PS: Joseph's advice is better.

Go to your local electronics store and purchase a USB CD-ROM, or you can purchase a USB drive enclosure, either will allow you to be able to use your CDROM without having to buy a huge amount of extra hardware.

Generally speaking most USB enclosures cost about $25-85 USD, but depending on your region that could be a bit lower than actual cost.

Once you do so, you should be able to press an F key on your keyboard to bring up a boot menu, and USB CDROM or storage device should appear in the menu as an item to boot from.

email me at lysacor@yahoo.com and I will try to work out the specifics for you and see if your laptop supports it.

You should be able to use an external USB CDROM to boot the OS and install it on the laptop. You will have to check your BIOS to see if it supports booting from a USB cdrom. Once you verify that, get one of these. http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Slim-Portable-EXTERNAL-USB-24X-CD-ROM-DRIVE-LAPTOP_W0QQitemZ150070818081QQihZ005QQcategoryZ80198QQcmdZViewItem
