I hate to break it to you, but of the many things the federal government spends money on, the military is one of the few that they're intended to do since 1776 (or so). Does the Fed gov't spend too much? Don't know? What's your basis? A better question is do we get what we pay for at a fair price? No! Would we like to see less spent across the board? Yes! Would I like to see Foreign Aid cut? Yes!! Would I like to see Education spending cut completely? Yes! It's not the Fed's responsibility. Would I like to see military spending cut? Yes (but not until every other program I don't like is cut)! You see, that's the problem. Most of us judge our federal government on social opinion, not business sense. I'm no historian, but I'm quite certain the feds pay for many programs never intended or envisioned when powdered wigs were in fashion. We have evolved to quite a generous nation and a lot of it is good stuff at (probably) a high cost. If any of us has a problem with too much spending, you've got to be willing to cut into all programs with a lean toward the original intent of federal government, not just what you feel is the right thing to do. Entitlements are my pet peeve. Bailing out Harley Davidson, airlines, Chrysler, others??!! Don't get me started!! :)

This site provides a pretty easy to read, high level view: http://www.bls.gov/oco/cg/cgs041.htm From that site ---"The Federal Government’s essential duties include defending the United States from foreign aggression and terrorism, representing U.S. interests abroad, enforcing laws and regulations, and administering domestic programs and agencies."

Wars are always expensive and so are building defensive measures to protect one's country. The Republicans have actually reduced a great deal of wasteful spending and I could probably find more waste in Congressional spending. It is scary whenever Democrats come into power, because their overall spending always goes up for social programs and for their political pet projects.
Our country does not need higher taxes at this time when we are already paying top dollars for gasoline and heating fuels. Please fight any attempts of the new Pelosi Congress to raise taxes, even if they swear on their mothers' graves, that they are ONLY doing it to pay off President Bush's war debt. It will be a disquise, like a fox in lamb's clothing.

hi, Grandma the following and that i'm no longer going everywhere, SS is the most excellent element to 'treatment', purely boost the cap to 2 hundred thousand from one oh six and we are going to all be positive. Your question about how did the authorities spending too a lot change right into a gross sales problem is purely right responded by preserving it continually replaced right into a gross sales problem it grew to change into that way at the same time as Bush did not contain the fee of both wars contained in the funds, he did it extrabudgetarily, and then he instituted a rash of tax breaks, so we had a lot less gross sales accessible to pay for the warfare. the money that replaced into paid lower back went into something noted as the final fund, no longer anybody particular merchandise contained in the funds, purple meat barrel is written into the funds and one mans purple meat project is anothers needed project, it somewhat relies upon on the position you sit down. We do favor to diminish spending, yet we can't attempt this to any large degree on the instantaneous using recession, reducing spending ability reducing jobs, and including 1000's to the rolls of unemployment would kill us economically, as those taxpayers, would change into non taxpayers. in no way what we choose. So we do favor to diminish spending, yet intently, or the outcomes will be not basic for the country, and we do favor to boost sales, and also you're attempting this by raising taxes, ideally on those who may have the funds for it and isn't any longer lacking dinner by paying extra. And we can't end electing politicians by the Viscount St. Albans they carry about abode, because we are all at heart very egocentric and that money is regarded upon as carry our taxes lower back to us.

Spending. I don't think they budget themselves as well as they could when they know all they have to do is raise taxes to get more money. I'd like to see them actually take a pay cut or a suspension of their perks before they raise taxes on us. So much is just wasted to appease people or programs etc. that aren't needed. Our state government spends like mad for things and we have some of the highest taxes in the nation and one of the biggest debts. All I know is my personal life is pretty much permenatly ruined for lousy financial decisions and we can't keep bailing them out for their lousy moves.

No, aside from the illegal war, 2 tax-breaks have gone to the wealthiest 4 %!!

Why is it Republicans are always screaming about taxes, yet run up a 3 1/2 Trillion deficit in the past 6 years, which we didn't do in all the years from the middle 80's to 2000!

Why is it you scream for smaller government and we get bigger!

How is it 500 millionaires have been made off of money that was suppose to go to fight a disaster of a war, while Bush cuts the VA Hospitals (with 22,000 wounded) and widows of those killed in Iraq!

!00 million for a japanese pitcher while America starves!

Both. Far too much military spending. Not enough education, healthcare, affordable housing spending. If you cut the military budget, up the other stuff, you'll probably end up with more taxes in the balance.

Spending. The military budget for the US is astronomical compared to all the programs put together. For what? We've already proven ourselves to be the world police. What else do we have to prove?

Just spending. For one thing, federal officials pay for personal things with "government money" (re: Teddy Kennedy's wild parties, paid for from the general fund., where the social security money is kept).

It is not "the government". It is the elected officials (all of them- all parties) who rob the coffers.
