I just had an ultrasound this past wednesday and was told the baby has dropped. I went to the grocery store today, and about halfway through the store, my back started hurting, and it just gets worse the more i move. I dont know if its just because i was walking alot and the weight of the baby caused it to start hurting, or if it could be back labor. The tech at the ultrasound didnt say which way the baby is facing, and i know if the baby is facing away from your back, you're likely to have back labor. It's my first baby, and i'm really sure how to tell when its labor or not, and with the pain in my back, could it be back labor? how long should i wait before i call my doctor? my water hasnt broke *which i know doesnt happen very often in pregnancy until they break it for you*, and i'm not having contractions. I lost my mucus plug way back in october when iwas in the hospital for a kidney stone. i dont want to worry myself and have it be a false alarm. what do you think it is?

When the baby drops, it can cause extra pressure on your back, legs and pelvic area. Just because your lower back hurts, doesn't mean you're in labor. Although, it could be a sign of early labor.

If you're not having contractions, I'd say you're not in labor. When you start feeling hard contractions (which many times start in your back) that have been about 5 minutes apart for at least an hour, I'd call the doctor.

Sometimes Braxton Hicks contractions can be pretty strong, but usually they are not consistent and they'll stop.

Take a warm bath and try to relax and see if you get some relief.

Good luck!

Even if you are in labor, you're most likely in very early labor... I'm 36 weeks, and my drs have told me I don't have to worry about calling until I can't laugh through my contractions anymore. I think you've got some time, so relax and take a bath or shower to ease the pain, but if this is it, good luck!

Contractions will be preset if you are in labor but if you are having back pain you will probably go into labor within the next week. When you do begin having contractions monitor how far apart they are when they start getting closer together and more painful each time you need to go to the hospital.

If this is constant pain - then it's unlikely to be labor at this point. Labor would be more of a rhythmical thing. The constant pain could be baby just in position thats hurting you.

Also to add on to what Lady J was saying I would try and put your feet up to take some of the pressure off as well. That always helped me when I was having similar pains during pregnancy.

Get off the internet and call your doctor. You could be starting labor.

I would call the Dr. just to be on the safe side. they will more then likely have you go the the office or hospital to get checked out and see if you are dilated and having contractions. Congrats!!
